The 2006 Currie Cup featured the top eight South African provinces doing battle in the Premier Division from June to October. The Free State Cheetahs and the Blue Bulls both finished with fifty competition points but the Cheetahs earned home field advantage throughout the playoffs by virtue of having a better points differential.
Those two sides ended up playing each other for the third straight year in the Final after disposing of the Sharks and Western Province in the semis. The title game in Bloemfontein was tied after both regulation and extra time, and as a result the match was drawn and the Currie Cup was shared for the first time since 1989.
