Springboks Claim Spectacular Dubai 7s!

December 01, 2008
South Africa stormed to a famous victory in the opening round of the 2008/2009 IRB World Sevens Series, thanks to a late try which sunk England 19-12 in the final! But it was the semi finals that produced some of the most exciting rugby of the tournament. England unbelievably raced to a 21-0 lead over New Zealand. The Kiwis, however, struck back three times but it wasn’t enough as England held on to win 21-19 in a thrilling match. A step better was the other semi final in which South Africa scored a try in the corner on full time with Mzwandile Stick kicking the sideline conversion to tie the match against Fiji 7-7. In extra time it was that magic man Stick who kicked a massive drop goal to seal the pulsating match 10-7!

I have been following the rugby news with great interest lately as the remaining spots are filled for the Sevens Rugby World Cup (RWC)! The last qualifier took place in Africa and was won by crowd favourites Kenya, with Tunisia and Zimbabwe also qualifying.

Being a part of a World Cup has always been a dream of mine, but I never thought that this would happen wearing a USA rugby jersey in the Bahamas!
This past weekend the Bahamas Rugby Club hosted the North America Rugby World Cup Qualifiers. Our team stayed at a 5-star hotel on the beach front – but for the first few days we were forced indoors with what looked like hurricane weather brewing outside.

After a very intense week of training in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the USA 7s team that will take part in the Sevens World Cup Qualifier has been named. The squad includes vice-captain Todd Clever – who is contracted with the South African Lions franchise next year – and captain Chris Wyles fresh from playing for Saracens in the UK.

What is it like being a professional rugby player? Many people dream of achieving this goal – but it is a lot harder than it sounds. For one week the selected 20 players competing for a spot on the USA 7s team will train on a full time basis – some of them experiencing this for the very first time. As we speak the team is assembled in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and the 12 players will be chosen this Sunday to compete in the Sevens World Cup Qualifiers!

One of the aspects which helps any rugby player to be more successful on the field is their attitude. This determination or hunger to achieve is very evident on the practice field as well through speed, strength and fitness. Those key areas could mean the difference between making a try saving tackle, scoring a match winning try, or getting the attention of the girls on the beach!
Return To Training With USA 7s

I was in San Diego last weekend for the first training camp of the season for the USA 7s side. It was confirmed a few months ago that the USA will now become a core team on the circuit – meaning that they will play in all eight IRB 7s tournaments this season – with the next eight months seeing us away from home for more than four months! My wife is going to kill me – but luckily she doesn’t read my columns until I am on tour!

From Tri Nations To IRB 7s

September 11, 2008
What a Tri Nations competition this year has seen! Australia, after suffering a massive 53-8 defeat to the Springboks, will face New Zealand for the 2008 Tri Nations title this weekend. One wonders if the result will go to the home side, who have been forced to make a few changes due to injury. For me the missing key is center Berrick Barnes.
De Villiers Under Fire!

Tri Nations Quote of the week by Springbok coach Pieter de Villiers: “Winning and losing are the same thing to me, it's just that winning is much nicer." The South African rugby public (with me included) were very skeptical when Jake White was replaced as Springbok coach by the somewhat unknown Pieter de Villiers.
